DESCRIPTION A study-unit intended to give an overview of the information profession. It introduces students to best practices for the information professional, while giving a background to the developments that have occurred within the profession. It also explains the methods employed and best practices in researching, writing and presentation of course work. Furthermore, it provides exposure to the different types of information centres, through guided practical field trips and visits to a number of relevant sites.

Study-unit Aims:

a) To introduce the basic tenets and best practices of the information profession;
b) To introduce students to the different types of information centres through first hand encounters with visits to different types of libraries and archives.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to understand and be aware of the raison d'etre of different types of information centres and professional ethics related to such work.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a) distinguish and relate to the different types of information centres and be aware of the role of different information specialists.
b) carry out research and present work which represents the recognized canons of academic honesty.
