DESCRIPTION The study-unit will cover the following themes:

• Linguistic variety: languages, dialects, accents
• The (socio-) linguistic situation in the Maltese Islands
• The status of Gozitan dialects with respect to Standard Maltese
• Overview of work on dialects in Malta: Xlukkajr, Imġarri
• Introducing the dialects of Nadur, Ta' Sannat, Żebbuġ

Apart from class room lectures the students will have the opportunity to listen to recorded conversations and speeches to illustrate the different dialects of Gozo.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit is intended to familiarize students withthe dialects of the island of Gozo, referring to linguistic variety (languages, dialects, accents) and the the socio-linguistic situation in the Maltese Islands. Another aim is to discuss the status of Gozitan dialects with respect to standard Maltese.

Il-kors jintroduċi l-varjazzjoni djalettali f’Għawdex. Tema ċentrali tal-kors hija ddistinzjoni bejn il-lingwa u d-djalett. Liema aspetti tad-djaletti Għawdxin jagħżluhom mill-Malti standard? Din id-domanda nweġbuha billi nistudjaw ix-xejriet soċjolingwistiċi, fonoloġiċi, lessikali, morfoloġiċi u sintattiċi tal-varjetajiet lingwistiċi t’Għawdex.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to describe in detail the phenomenon of variety in the Maltese language, and to outline different dialect studies which have been carried out. The students will also acquire hands-on skills through a guided fieldwork exerciseon one or more Gozitan dialects.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit students will have acquired skills in identifying the different dialects in Gozo and
thereby helping to preserve these dialects for future generations.
