DESCRIPTION This unit provides a fundamental knowledge of strategic management in its widest sense within the logistics and transport sector. It covers corporate mission, vision and strategy, organisational, business and corporate policy and supply chain performance principles and integration. The importance of the customer/client is emphasised as well as the constant need for innovation and change to transform the company/industry. It also provides a basic understanding of transportation [including passenger transport] planning methods and principles so that students have a basic knowledge of the entire transport and logistics sector.

Study-unit Aims

The aim of this unit is to provide a fundamental knowledge of strategic management in its widest sense within the logistics and transport sector. It also provides a basic understanding of transportation [including passenger transport] planning methods and principles so that students have a basic knowledge of the entire transport and logistics sector.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Understand the nature of strategic management.
2. Comprehend the business mission, mission statements, corporate vision and stakeholder analysis.
3. grasp the basic concepts of supply and demand for transport and logistics services and products.
4. Analyse markets and competitors and strategies for competitive advantage.
5. Understand the stages in the transport planning process.
6. Know the various data collection techniques, their comparative advantages and disadvantages.
7. Know the process of the development of transport plans and strategies.
8. Assess the processes of performance monitoring and policy review.
9. Recognise the importance of appraisal and evaluation.
10. Know the requirements of detailed project definition.
11.Know the importance of evaluating projects costs and benefits and resulting externalities.
11. Know the advantages and limitations of private and private sector funding.
12. Comprehend the objectives, process and evaluation of privatisation.
13. Understand the implications of the globailsation process.
14. Examine variations in management styles.
15. Link Human Resources Strategies with the organisation's strategies.
16. Critically assess the principles of corporate social responsibility relevant to transport and logistics organisations.
