DESCRIPTION The discipline of fleet management has assumed great importance in modern business. Being a critical and costly function, it cannot be overlooked and efficient control and management of one's transport fleet translates itself into substantial cost savings. This unit will present a comprehensive description of existing logistical practices, describe ways and means to apply logistical principles to achieve competitive advantage and provide a conceptual approach for integrating logistics as a core competency in enterprise strategy. Different specialists from the various sectors involved in fleet management will be invited to share their experience over the years in coordinating and managing different fleets in Malta, around Maltese waters, as well as coordination of fleets in and out of the islands (including by air).

Study-Unit Aims:

- To give knowledge of effective fleet transport management practices;
- To enable analysis and examination of current operations;
- To make organisational improvements;
- To explore specific types of fleets in operation locally;
- To appreciate the logistical requirements surrounding the management and coordination of fleets;
- To examine the logistical differences in specialised areas of air, sea and land fleet management;
- To examine the key hurdles presented by different contexts for fleet management;
- To explore potential new solutions to current problems faced by sea, air and land fleets.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Examine the link of transport in the company operations and activities;
- Analyse the key areas of operations, roles and responsibilities;
- Identify and Understand key performance indicators, speed, cost, reliability, routing and scheduling;
- The trade-off between vehicle fill and customer requirements, drops and distances, 'own and operate or `contract out' options;
- Succeed in improving operations, accident awareness and cost analysis;
- Be able to improve fleet performance and operational costs.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Develop the analytical and reasoning skills of the candidate;
- Provide an environment in which strategic decisions or operational issues are given full considerations, based on sound analysis and understanding;
- Allow the candidate to apply management methods in an operational situation, demonstrating their ability to apply their knowledge and implement business improvements.
