DESCRIPTION This study-unit is targeted to first year midwifery students, to develop their knowledge and skills about infection prevention and control. This study-unit will enable appreciation of research evidence for infection control practice during the antenatal intranatal and postnatal period. The teaching/learning component will consists mostly of teacher directed study whilst allowing space for students to explore more relevant issues in depth through independent study.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to enable the midwifery student to become competent at point of registration as a midwife in providing care to women based on evidence - based principles of infection prevention and control.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate evidence based practices in infection control during the antenatal, intranatal and postnatal period;
- Demonstrate the ability to initiate, obtain, evaluate and apply microbiological knowledge in relation to infection control problems in the maternity clinical arena;
- Evaluate the contributions of multidisciplinary team members to the prevention and control of infection.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Demonstrate Initiate, manage and evaluate research based techniques in infection prevention and infection control;
- Apply the principles of infection prevention and control in line with local policies.
