DESCRIPTION This study-unit is targeted to third year midwifery students to give them a understanding of a variety of midwifery skills in a simulated midwifery setting with regards to complications of childbearing during the antenatal, intra natal and postnatal periods. It combines lectures and skills practice to train students in a variety of clinical scenarios relevant to midwifery practice.

The students will be able to demonstrate the skills in the recognition of the warning signs of abnormalities in the mother and the fetus, which necessitate referral to a doctor.

The study-unit takes the form of scenario-based class-room teaching. The students will practise under supervision how to initiate appropriate emergency measures within their scope of professional practice in instances as intrapartum and postpartum haemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, eclamptic fits, impending breech delivery in the absence of medical aid, cord prolapse.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are for the students to have comprehensive knowledge related to communication skills and record keeping, to enable them to recognise emergency complications of pregnancy/childbirth and to initiate appropriate measures to achieve a favourable outcome.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify women and babies in need of emergency resuscitative measures;
- Have knowledge of the appropriate means of communication to call for assistance initiate appropriate emergency measures to control bleeding within the student's scope of professional practice;
- Recognise cord prolapse, shoulder dystocia, uterine rupture, eclamptic fits, impending breech delivery;
- Monitoring the condition of the woman/fetus where appropriate;
- Record information following the event; and
- Communicate with the women and relatives during and following the event.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Communicate skillfully and to keep record keeping contemporaneously;
- Recognise women in need of emergency treatment and apply first aid measures to treat the situation;
- Initiate appropriate measures to achieve a safe outcome;
- Monitor the condition of the mother; and
- Perform an emergency breech delivery in the absence of medical assistance respond in emergency of collapse and shock in simulation.
