DESCRIPTION The study is a a combination of lectures and practice about preparation for parenthood, and parentcraft classes. Students will be able to teach mothers about nutrition in pregnancy, minor problems of pregnancy, self-care of the gravid mother, fetal growth, exercises in pregnancy, planning and preparing for childbirth, and infant-feeding.

Students will also be able to teach parents, how to care for themselves following childbirth, caring for the neonate in the early postpartum period, adaptation to motherhood, fatherhood, grandparent-hood. Issues like family planning, hazards in the home and first-aid are also subjects that need to be included in preparation for parenthood programmes. Other topics include relationship between parents and their child, relationship between parents and grandparents, emotional well-being of both parents and grandparents, child rearing, and family work-life balance. Students must be prepared so that they may be able to adapt such programmes according to the specific needs of the parents.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study-unit is to enable students become competent at point of registration as midwives who are able to provide parentcraft or preparation for parenthood programmes to mothers, fathers, their families including grandparents and families with special needs.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Define the role of the midwife in parent education;
- Demonstrate knowledge about factors that affect teaching and learning;
- Analyze how parent education is taught and topics that need to be covered;
- Acknowledge families with special needs such as teenage parents and migrant parents and demonstrate knowledge how to address their needs in planning programmes to prepare mothers and partners for parenthood.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Design the logistics of a preparation for parenthood programme and implement such programmes;
- Evaluate preparation for parenthood programmes and adapt them according to the needs of parents;
- Provide practical information about preconception-care, nutrition in pregnancy, how to cope with minor problems of pregnancy, labour and childbirth, caring for the mother, father and baby in the first year of the postnatal period;
- Provide practical exercises about relaxation during childbirth, exercises in relieving aches and pains including basic back care during pregnancy and postpartum period;
- Provide practical exercises about building and strengthening relationships;
- Provide practical information and advice about safety issues in the home and avoiding hazards;
- Providing practical information on work-life balance including, time-management and teamwork.
