DESCRIPTION This study-unit will focus on the meaning of Education and learning in a knowledge society elaborating on the development of 21st century skills. Educational policy frameworks and pedagogical models will be discussed in relation to formal and innovative learning contexts. Technology-Enhanced teaching and learning will be discussed in relation to the innovative classroom practices and 'beyond' classroom learning. Different modes of technology-mediated learning will be promoted using relevant digital tools and on-line environments. Teachers' and students' readiness for technology-enhanced teaching, learning and assessment will be discussed referring to digital literacy frameworks and continuous professional development.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to promote understanding of:
• The meaning of learning in a knowledge society.
• The role of technology in promoting educational innovation.
• Digital literacy frameworks.
• Different pedagogical models and modes of learning through technology.
• The role of teachers in promoting innovation through technology.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• Describe learning in a knowledge society.
• Identify 21st century skills competencies: fluency in use of digital tools and media; oral, written & technology-mediated communication; creativity; autonomous learning; critical thinking; multilingualism; intercultural communication; multi-disciplinarity; team skills and networking. Team skills include: monitoring, managing and evaluating contiguous and on-line group activity.
• Describe different ICT policy frameworks.
• Describe different digital literacy frameworks.
• Discuss different pedagogical models and modes of learning with technology.
• Develop a personal digital competencies profile.
• Understand the role of a teacher in promoting innovation in the school.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
• Use digital tools and on-line environments to promote and manage different modes of learning.
• Integrate different classroom technologies in good pedagogical practice.
• Use eportfolios to manage different modes of learning.
• Use digital games, simulations and immersive on-line environments to promote exploratory and inquiry-based learning.
• Promote a constructionist approach through a range of design tools.
• Promote collaborative approaches through relevant on-line tools.
