DESCRIPTION This study-unit explores the role of Home Economics and Textile Studies educators in relation to the mass media. Students learn how to critically analyse media messages and use mass media experiences as learning tools in the classroom. On the practical side, they are also provided with an introduction to the world of educational television and the opportunity to practise basic techniques in TV programme production and presentation.

Study-unit Aims

- Assess to what extent HE and Textiles features in the printed, audio and electronic/visual media
- Analyse the media as an opinion maker and learn how to become a better communicator while defending oneself from certain media messages
- Communicate better in class through the various media

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Bring to the HE and Textiles classroom verbal/on-screen and non-verbal/non-text media experiences which students are exposed to in their daily lives and exploit them as learning tools
- Understand and learn how to handle equipment required for the production of print, audio and audio-visual material

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Produce a balanced/effective message for different media
- Plan, script, present and produce various media products
