DESCRIPTION Students are expected to write and submit for examination a dissertation of 15,00 words related to the majoring area undertaken. The 15,000 limit should be exclusive of notes, bibliography, and appendices. Students should register for this study-unit during the final year of studies, but the topic must be chosen during the first semester of their third year, after consultation with the Head of Department and the Chair of the Majoring Area. The general outline of the intended topic should be expounded on the Dissertation Proposal which will be submitted on the appropriate form and approved by the Music Studies Board.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this dissertation are to:
a. enable students to give extended focus to an approved musicological topic and a critical edition of a work preserved in one of Malta's musical archives;
b. foster independent learning and a self-critical attitude;
c. develop the skills and critical powers to conduct research and further knowledge;
d. cultivate professional standards related to the musicological discipline.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a. demonstrate sufficient knowledge and understanding of the research topic;
b. evaluate original sources and research with a methodical manner;
c. be more critical when selecting data and findings;
d. write with authority and critical engagement that are proper to the musicological discipline.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a. present a critical edition of a work/or works from any musical archives found in the Maltese Islands,
b. contribute to the appreciation of Malta's musical heritage through the dissemination of works that have been critically edited according to strict musicological rigour required by the discipline.

ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
