DESCRIPTION Students are expected to write and submit for examination a portfolio of compositions accompanied by a supporting document relating to the portfolio being submitted. The 8,000 word limit should be exclusive of notes, bibliography, and appendices. Students should register for this study-unit during the final year of studies, but the proposed portfolio must be submitted during the first semester of their third year, after consultation with the Head of Department and the Chair of the Majoring Area. The proposed portfolio should be expounded on the Dissertation Proposal which will be submitted on the appropriate form and approved by the Music Studies Board.

Study-unit Aims:

The composition portfolio with supporting document is ultimately designed to apply and extend the knowledge and skills acquired during the Course while demonstrating the student's keen sense of critical judgement of the compositional process.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a. develop and extend their compositional techniques;
b. encourage creativity and imagination to an advanced level;
c. be more critical in music composition;
d. acquire a deeper understanding of the compositional possibilities of instruments and ensembles.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a. compose pieces on a medium in which compositional ideas are presented in a musically leterate form;
b. develop an awareness of an appropriate range of contemporary compositional idioms;
c. expand his/her knowledge of a number of harmonic, contrapuntal and textural precedures developed during the 20th century.present a portfolio of works which will shed light on the student's creative process and aesthetic judgement.

ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination and Portfolio is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
