DESCRIPTION A repertoire of piano music by composers of different periods and styles will be analysed and studied. Attention will be given to different aspects of performing such as technique, style and public presentation. Lectures will be given on an individual basis and in groups, as master classes.

Study-unit Aims:

Repertoire will be chosen individually for students according to their individual abilities as performers. The pieces chosen will first be analysed from the structural, historical and performance-history aspects. Aspects from the analysis will then be incorporated into the students' performance.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to analyse works for piano from different styles and periods.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to perform the piano works studied with particular attention to structural analysis and historically-informed performance aspects.

3. Competence:

At the end of the study-unit the learner will be able to choose the most effective type of practicing tools for studying the pieces discussed and analyzed during the study-unit.

4. Learning Outcomes:

The learner will be able to apply what has been studied in the pieces discussed and analyzed during the course to other pieces in a similar style.

- J.S. Bach, Suites and Partitas (Henle)
- J.Haydn, Sonatas (Henle)
- L.van Beethoven, Piano Sonatas (Henle/Peters Urtext)
- B.Bartok, Mikrokosmos (Boosey and Hawkes)
- Other piano works by 19th and 20th-century composers, as advised during the study-unit.

The texts by Bach are available at the Library. However, students are requested to have their own copies.
