DESCRIPTION Works for piano and orchestra and 20th-century works for solo piano will be discussed and analysed. The characteristics of historically-informed performances will also be discussed in this study-unit. Discussions will be followed by listening to the works in question.

Study-unit Aims:

In this study-unit, the lecturer will familiarise the student with different techniques of analysing music for solo piano from the twentieth century and for piano and orchestra from the standard repertoire. A wide spectrum of composers and styles will be selected and discussed.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to analyse and discuss music for solo piano by twentieth-century composers and standard concertos for piano and orchestra.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to choose a large-scale work or a collection of works for solo piano or piano and orchestra and discuss it in a public presentation.

3. Competence:
At the end of the course the student will know how to discuss and analyze piano concertos by different composers from other periods and styles and contemporary piano music.

4. Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the course the student will be able to give a public presentation discussing a major work for piano solo or for piano and orchestra, or a number of works, with demonstrations at the piano.
