DESCRIPTION This study-unit consists of an insight into the aestethics and techniques used in composing acousmatic (electronic only) and electracoustic (electronics with traditional instruments) focusing on sound synthesis and processing.

Study-unit Aims:

This unit aims to give the composition pupils the tools and knowledge to compose electronic music.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) Use the different method of synthesis available nowadays to build sounds from scratch;
b) Build up an artistic composition using digital sound editing and processing techniques;
c) Analyze sounds emanating from sources other than musical instruments objectively;
d) Use stereophonic space creatively in electronic music composition;
e) Collect non-instrumental sounds and select some of them for use in electronic compositions.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

a) Able to synthesise sounds using different types of synthesis;
b) Able to build these sounds into a meaningful work;
c) Able to process sound creatively;
d) Aware of aesthetic factors to be taken into consideration when composing digital music;
e) develop aural skills to analyze whether a non-instrumental sound is suitable for developing within a piece.
