DESCRIPTION The study-unit which is a continuation of MSP3183 consists of seminars, workshops, critical discussions in which the role of individuality in composition is tackled. The unit makes particular references to composers that have helped shape the late 20th-century scenario and their outputs. A critical overview of this repertoire will be carried out. During the course of this study-unit individual tutorial sessions that evaluate the progress registered by the student will be given.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims at
a) developing a self-critical aesthetical approach towards composition
b) to make the student aware of contemporary repertoire
c) prepare the student to acquire a good compositional technique in preparation for the submission of the composition portfolio in line with the partial fulfillment of composition majors.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a) know the current developments and techniques of contemporary composition
b) know and understand the strategic use of the entire instrumental canvas

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to compose a portfolio of contrasted compositions that demonstrate their technical prowess in the handling of textures and compositional tools.

Musical scores of representative composers. A copy of such scores for perusal by students will be made available by the lecturer.
