DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on the sociological aspects related to PE and sport. Lectures aim at developing a progressive awareness of the development of sport as it was in the past to the way it is seen and practiced nowadays. Students are challenged in relating the conflict theories and applying them to the way sport is practiced and understood nowadays and the ways such views and beliefs can effect the professional teacher at work. The main themes related to the social aspects of sport are discussed and used as media through which opinions and debate are encouraged.

By the end of the study-unit students will be able to:
- Interpret social aspects of sport and differentiate between the functions of sport as they evolved through the ages in class discussions
- Prepare a report focusing on a chosen social theme based on research and personal experiences and present it to the class as part of the course work
- Describe the main functions of sport and the critical elements compiling the civilistaion spurt and the process of sportisation through discussion and readings
