DESCRIPTION Select readings from both narrative and poetic texts of Classical Hebrew Literature, such as passages from the Book of Jeremiah, will be studied. Although the emphasis of this course lies on Classical Hebrew philology, the readings studied will offer a direct contact with various aspects of Hebraic civilization, including some historical aspects.

Study-unit Aims

1. To teach students how to make a close reading of select texts in Classical Hebrew.
2. To show students how to grapple with intermediate and advanced grammatical points of Classical Hebrew through the select texts.
3. To show students how to integrate various cultural and historical aspects of Hebraic civilization through select Classical Hebrew writings.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Grapple with both narrative and poetic texts in Classical Hebrew;
2. Understand the finer grammatical points of Classical Hebrew through the texts read;
3. Use an advanced dictionary of Classical Hebrew;
4. Deal with problems of textual criticism.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Read texts (even those in English) much more attentively;
2. Appreciate other cultures;
3. Have an eye to detail.
