DESCRIPTION In the third year of the BA (Hons) degree in Near Eastern Studies, students will write and submit for examination a dissertation of 15,000-18,000 words, exclusive of notes, bibliography, and appendices. Students must discuss the topic of their dissertation with the relevant tutor prior to registration. The chosen topic must be connected with the broad field of Near or Middle Eastern Studies.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this study-unit are to train students to:
1. write a long research paper according to the established criteria of academic writing;
2. make critical use of primary sources and formulate interpretations on the basis of such evidence;
3. engage critically with secondary literature and test scholarly hypotheses;
4. apply the knowledge and understanding acquired in the first two years of the course to a research project of their choice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. discuss their research question in detail;
2. analyze and interpret primary sources;
3. review and evaluate secondary literature;
4. formulate hypotheses and interpretations in connection with their research topic.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. write a sustained piece of academic work based on an analysis and interpretation of primary and secondary sources;
2. examine and criticize different types of sources;
3. demonstrate evidence of creative and critical thinking;
4. discuss a topic related to Near/Middle Eastern Studies in a critical manner.

Main Text/s and any supplementary readings:

Students will draw up a bibliography relevant to their chosen topic in consultation with their supervisor.

 
ADDITIONAL NOTES **September Assessment Session: Students who fail to obtain an overall pass mark will be re-examined in the Dissertation. However, the resit availability for the Oral Examination is at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
