DESCRIPTION Students will be guided towards the development of the skills associated with the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care delivery towards patients being cared for in acute care setting such as hospitals.

This study-unit will discuss the following topics:
- Caring of a patient in an acute hospital/ clinic setting;
- Spiritual Distress;
- Pain and body image;
- Fluid and Electrolyte Imbalance;
- Trauma and shock;
- Anxiety;
- Fatigue and Insomnia;
- Loss and Grief;
- Introduction to Nutrition in Acute Care;
- Self Esteem.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to develop students' nursing competence by exploring issues related to the care of adults with a variety of health related conditions. The underpinning philosophy is that by integrating and applying the knowledge of the related subjects addressed, and working in conjunction with the multi-disciplinary team, the appropriate nursing interventions are delivered.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Understand the needs of patients with diverse health related conditions;
- Examine and analyse the underlying theory and principles of selected health conditions and interventions including physical, psychological, spiritual, ethical, and legal principles;
- Identify and know to involve the participation and contribution of members of the health care team in patient care organisation and delivery;
- Appreciate and integrate the relatives and family in patient care delivery in acute settings.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Develop critical thinking skills in order to assess and plan, care given to patients experiencing diverse health related conditions;
- Deliver the various of aspects of care indicated by one's condition in an acute setting;
- Implement evaluation measures to monitor / evaluate care provision in an acute setting;
- Identify the need for the participation and contribution of members multidisciplinary team;
- Call in and involve other members of the team in patient care organisation, planning and evaluation;
- Involve the relatives/ family through appropriate lines of communication and involvement in patient 's care.
