DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces community health care as an approach towards providing conditions necessary for healthy living, as well as providing preventive, curative and rehabilitative care within community settings. Thus, it addresses environmental health issues, together with methods of providing health care at places where people live and work.

Embracing the values underpinning the concept of Primary Health Care, the study-unit emphasis on the need for promoting equity, and using a multisectorial and culturally sensitive approach to service provision. Students are enabled to learn about and criticize local community services based on these principles.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To introduce the concept of Primary Health Care as outlined by the W.H.O.;
- To identify the role and functions of various sectors/departments/organisations in providing primary health care services;
- To discuss the methods, advantages and challenges of using different community settings for providing health care;
- To identify roles and functions of the primary heath care team, with emphasis on nursing provision within different sectors of Primary Health Care;
- To raise awareness about environmental determinants to public health, outlining main sources of environmental hazards, their influence on health and possible means of prevention.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Apply the principles of the 'Health for All' policy framework in one's planning and delivery of care;
- Apply the concept of Primary Health Care in one's practice;
- Discuss Primary Care Services in Malta;
- Identify and discuss advantages and challenges of providing care in different community settings;
- Identify the various nursing roles in community care, and their contribution to primary, secondary and tertiary prevention, as part of the health care team;
- Recognize the principles and challenges of environmental health including health housing, food safety and hygiene, water management, waste management and atmospheric pollution.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to apply basic concepts of community oriented health care when discussing and participating in such an approach to health care delivery.
