DESCRIPTION This study-unit will incorporate:

1. Compassionate care and compassion fatigue;
2. Developing Competence and Integrity at work;
3. Handling patients ‘emotions: anxiety, fear and anger;
4. Conflict resolution at the workplace;
5. Clinical reasoning in practice;
6. Transformational Leadership in nursing;
7. Interview skills;
8. Documentation skills;
9. Contemporary issues in nursing; and
10. Complementary therapies to address a holistic approach to nursing care.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit builds on the learning outcomes achieved in Personal and Professional Development 1. Hence the aim of these study-units is to o enable students to:

- Highlight plans for future career development; and
- Review the range of existing skills required for use in clinical practice, both with patients and work colleagues.

This study-unit also gives students the opportunity to think on their plans for the future and give them skills that help them engage in further personal and professional development.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- identify ways for future professional development;
- understand the possible psychological considerations for patient behaviour;
- develop knowledge and awareness about complementary therapies; and
- develop an awareness to contemporary issues in nursing.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- develop competence at work;
- reflect on and identify one's coping skills in view of one's emotions;
- reflect on how to support patients cope with their emotions;
- present and prepare oneself well for a job interview;
- critically appraise the care of patients; and
- take care of themselves so as to prevent burnout.
