DESCRIPTION Students will be trained in the following areas: Interviewing and history taking, Assessment of the Cardiovascular system including evaluation of the circulation, pulses (peripheral & central), blood pressure & organ perfusion, heart sounds & murmurs. Assessment of the Respiratory System including effort and efficacy of breathing, breath sounds. Assessment of the abdomen including: identification of systematic signs associated with intra-abdominal pathology, examination for organ enlargement, assessment of kidney function. Neurological assessment: examination of the twelve cranial nerves, examination of the motor & sensory systems, assessment of co-ordination. Assessment of the major structures in the neck: examination of they thyroid gland, lymph nodes, salivary glands & cervical spine.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit is designed to teach students the clinical skills required to assess a client's health status.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Interpret symptoms and signs correctly in order to plan subsequent care.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Interview a client and write a health history. Conduct a basic assessement of the client's health condition.
