DESCRIPTION This study-unit will introduce nursing students to common nursing skills which are carried out routinely within all clinical settings. Students will be taught these skills through a theoretical introduction followed up with practical and hands on demonstrations in a simulated environment in the clinical labs.

Topics that will be discussed include:
- Specimen collection;
- Assessing wound healing & removing sutures;
- Wound cleaning & dressing;
- Stoma care;
- Care of drains;
- Inserting a NGT;
- Urinary catheterisation;
- Principles of drug administration and administering PO medications;
- Administering ID, SC & IM medications;
- Administering oxygen;
- Administering inhaled Rx;
- Administering controlled drugs;
- Measuring blood glucose levels;
- Measuring blood pressure by auscultation;
- Respiratory assessment and respiratory care; and
- In-hospital resuscitation.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to help the student to perform essential nursing skills under the direct supervision of a qualified staff nurse.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Practice essential nursing skills;
- Relate the practice of nursing skills to anatomy and physiology and common medical/surgical conditions; and
- Link theoretical knowledge to the performance of clinical skills.

2. Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to demonstrate performance of essential skills safely under supervision.
