DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces the principles of management with a special focus on their application in a healthcare context. The role of the nurse will be discussed within the management proces , that is in planning/decision making, organizing, controlling and leading. Planning within the nursing context will be evaluated according to the different levels of management, at an operational and at a clinical level.

The importance of strategic planning and how this can be implemented will be reviewed together with organizational structures within health care settings. Leadership will be discussed in detail with an overview of the major theories related to leadership styles and how they can be applied depending on the situation. The importance of evaluating clinical practice and how to ensure quality of care will also be considered. This study-unit will explain the management skills that are required of nurses including communication skills, conflict resolution, decision making, delegation, stress management, emotional intelligence and how to enhance staff motivation, job satisfaction and manage change.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims to help the student:

- Understand the meaning of the management process and how this can be applied in clinical practice;
- Understand the roles of the various nursing leaders within the heath care settings;
- Appreciate the importance of planning at any level including at a strategic level and how can this be implemented in practice;
- Identify the main management skills that are needed by nurses including communication skills, team working, decision making, delegation, managing of change, achieving work-life balance and enhancing staff motivation and job satisfaction.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- describe the role of the nurse in implementing the management process; that is planning, organizing, leading and controlling;
- distinguish between different levels of management;
- define leadership and understand theories related to leadership styles and how different leadership styles can be utilized in different situations in health care;
- discuss how to evaluate clinical practice and ensure quality of care;
- describe the different organizations of care in health care settings.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to

- explain the skills required for effective management including communication, conflict resolution, decision making, team working, delegating, managing change, achieving work-life balance and how to enhance staff motivation and job satisfaction.
