TITLE Nursing in the Accident and Emergency Setting Practicum

DESCRIPTION During this practical study-unit, each student will have the opportunity to care for a range of patients within the following areas of the emergency department:

- Accident and Emergency Department;
- Triage Room;
- Paediatric Emergency Room;
- Resuscitation Room;
- Fresh Trauma Clinic; and
- Pre-hospital care.

The student will also learn specific skills related to the emergency nursing including: Airway management, Vascular access, Spinal immobilisation, Limb immobilisation, ALS - including use of defibrillator and resuscitation drugs and aggression management.

Study-Unit Aims:

The aim of this practical study-unit is to provide the student with opportunities to integrate and apply emergency nursing theory and skills in the clinical setting. Students will gain "hands-on" experience with a variety of assessment and clinical interventions used in the Accident and Emergency Department.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify different triage categories of individuals presenting themselves at the emergency department;
- Describe the role of each member of the multi-disciplinary team within the emergency department; and
- Distinguish between urgent and non-urgent cases.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- assist qualified nurses within the emergency department in delivering safe, efficient and competent nursing care.
