DESCRIPTION Ethical issues relevant to cancer care:

Collusion, Informed Consent, Clinical Trials, Advanced Directives;
Psychosocial and spiritual issues relevant to cancer care and related management;
Caring for ourselves: cancer nursing and stress related issues;
New developments in cancer treatment and related nursing care, including complementary approaches to cancer care;
Specific cancers and the implications for nursing care;
Nursing management of common cancer related symptoms such as pain, fatigue, alterations in nutrition, alterations in elimination, anxiety and depression;
Common Oncological emergencies.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to provide generalist nursing students with an educational experience that would develop their ability to respond to the various and changing needs of patients suffering from cancer and their families, through a reflection on patient and family needs in view of current cancer care nursing practice and an enquiring approach to evidence-based patient care.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Show an awareness of the impact of cancer nursing on health care professionals and identify effective self-care measures. Consider common ethical issues in cancer care and the implications for nursing practice. Demonstrate knowledge of any major new developments in cancer treatment and the related nursing care. Discuss the use of complementary therapy in cancer care and demonstrate a basic knowledge of common therapies in use. Demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics and management of the major cancers. Demonstrate an understanding of symptom management and the implications for nursing care. Demonstrate knowledge of how to assess for and recognise common oncological emergencies.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Demonstrate the ability to analyse current practices in relation to patient needs.
