DESCRIPTION The first part of the study-unit will discuss about the general principles of rehabilitation. The study unit will begin by discussing about the different definitions of rehabilitation and how disability is viewed in terms of the the International Classification of Disability, Functioning and Health (ICF), (WHO,2001). The different contexts where rehabilitation can take place and the important role of the nurse within the rehabilitation team will be highlighted. The different tools to evaluate the rehabilitation outcomes and services will be discussed within a context of cost-effectiveness and evidence based practice. Two important topics that are integral in successful rehabilitation, namely discharge planning and supporting informal carers will be discussed. Psychological issues in rehabilitation especially how to motivate and support patients and relatives through the sometimes difficult process of rehabilitation will be reviewed. The second part of the study-unit will focus on rehabilitation interventions for patients/clients groups with specific conditions such as cerebrovascular, orthopaedic and neurological conditions. The role of the nurse within a rehabilitation team in caring for these particular patients/client groups will be discussed with the help of a number of case studies.

Study-unit Aims

The study-unit will seek to assist student in :

- Defining rehabilitation and its application in different contexts;
- Understanding the role of the nurse in rehabilitation;
- Appreciating the different rehabilitation settings and rehabilitation outcomes;
- Acknowledging the psychological issues related to rehabilitation;
- Understanding the role of the nurse in supporting and educating informal carers;
- Understanding the principles of discharge planning;
- Appreciating the laws in Malta with regards persons with disability;
- Understanding the role of the nurse in specific conditions such as stroke rehabilitation orthopedic rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation, rehabilitation of spinal chord injury and traumatic brain injury.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Have an understanding of:
- Rehabilitation and disability;
- The role of the nurse in rehabilitation;
- The importance of informal care givers;
- The different rehabilitation settings and rehabilitation outcomes;
- The role of other members of the rehabilitation team.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Work within a rehabilitation team;
- Develop rehabilitation skills to improve functional recovery to patients with specific conditions.
