TITLE Orthopaedic Care Elective Practice Placement

DESCRIPTION Through this practical elective study-unit, students will be exposed to a range of settings in which persons suffering from orthopaedic problems or injuries are managed and treated. Through this exposure students will consolidate the theoretical knowledge acquired in the concurrent theoretical study-unit and learn to apply this knowledge to practice.

This study-unit consists of a variety of clinical placements which may include: the range of orthopaedic wards, orthopaedic related clinics and operating theatres at the Mater Dei Hospital as well as working alongside specialist nurses.

The student must complete a total of 240 hours (distributed evenly over 13 weeks) for this placement.

In order to be eligible for assessment the student must:

- complete a minimum of 190 hours by the 13th week; and
- satisfactorily complete the documentation required for year 3 (the Practice Portfolio).

Study-Unit Aims:

The overall aim of this study-unit is to provide final year nursing students with the opportunity to observe and practice under supervision in various orthopaedic care settings.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Discuss the basic principles related to the care of orthopaedic patients;
- Discuss the ethical and legal issues which guide orthopaedic nursing practice;
- Contribute to the effective management of care of patients with orthopaedic problems, including the assessment of, and implementation of therapeutic nursing interventions;
- Demonstrate a good level of knowledge about a range of orthopaedic devices which are used to aid bone healing and mobility; and
- Critically reflect on their own as well as others' nursing practice.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Communicate effectively with members of the multidisciplinary team, patients and their carers;
- Work effectively in an interdisciplinary team setting;
- Educate patients and their carers about aspects of orthopaedic nursing care which will aid a timely and safe discharge from hospital;
- Carry out holistic patient assessment and identify actual and potential problems;
- Develop a holistic and individualized care plan of patients according to the particular developmental stage of the lifespan;
- Demonstrate skill in managing the care of patients with orthopaedic devices such as (but limited to) plaster casts, traction, and external fixators.
