DESCRIPTION This study-unit will consist of taught sessions and discussions about the subject matter in order to meet the study-unit's aims and learning outcomes listed below. The content will consist of: Tertiary prevention. Theories of rehabilitation. Hallmarks of rehabilitation. Attitudes of professionals and the general public, The negative impacts and characteristics of severe mental illness, Behaviour, skills, decisions and self-control, Myths and facts about people with mental illness, Institutionalisation and deinstitutionalization, Family and family burden. Social support, Legal issues and ethical conflicts, Patient's rights. Patient advocacy. Szasz “right to...” Assessment tools.

Study-unit Aims:

To enable the student to develop insights of tertiary prevention of chronic mental illness for the individuals and their families.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- describe personal attitudes about individuals with chronic mental illness and the influence of these attitudes on care provision;

- Define the concept of tertiary prevention;

- Describe the models of tertiary prevention for populations with chronic mental illness;

- Implement the nursing process in rehabilitation of the chronic mentally ill;

- Develop and implement a role for the psychiatric nurse in the treatment of chronic mental illness;

- Contribute as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the planning and development of rehabilitation programmes.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Assess the mentally ill patient and formulate a tailor-made care plan for his/her needs;

- Plan and implement rehabilitative care for this person;

- Contribute as a member of the multidisciplinary team in the planning and development of rehabilitation programmes and evaluate existing ones.
