DESCRIPTION Each student will function as a team member of the unit/ward group with specific responsibilities for managing (under supervision of their mentor) the care for a group of 4 patients. All associated clinical and theoretical knowledge/skills will need to be demonstrated to achieve the necessary competencies of this studu-unit. This is the last practice study-unit and therefore the final opportunity before practical examination to be able to clarify skills and knowledge levels.

Study-unit Aims:

To provide the student with supervised clinical placement, for both skills development and theoretical application to practice and to allow the student the opportunity to manage a care group of four patients.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Relate the theoretical material from ancillary study-units to the clinical placements area;
- Compare different clinical settings to establish how forms of mental health nursing varies across them;
- Discuss the care management activities required to deliver care to a group of patients with a range of dependencies;
- Describe how care is organised in different settings.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Relate the theoretical constructs from ancillary study-units to clinical practice activities;
- Manage a care programme for a designated group of four patients throughout a shift period;
- Work as a team member;
- To successfully complete the mental health nursing competencies associated with the study-unit;
- Evaluate their strengths and weaknesses assessment against their progress within the clinical area.
