DESCRIPTION This study-unit will consist of taught sessions and discussions about the subject matter in order to meet the study-unit's aims and learning outcomes listed below. Content will include: Index offenses, Personality disorders, Public safety issues – therapy versus security, The law and forensic care, Working with adolescent patients, Working with sex offenders, Working with the patient who has a psychotic illness, Working with learning disabled offender patients, Working with the personality disordered offender patient, Firesetters, Self harming behaviours, Violence and aggression, Problematic substance misuse, Risk assessment and management, Evidence based practice, Diversion from criminal justice system, In-patient facilities, Community care, Relatives and informal caregivers, Involvement of NGOs, Psychosocial interventions, incl. CBT, DBT and individual therapies, Ethics and morality, Personal attitudes, Evaluation of strengths and weaknesses in relation to this patient group.

Study-unit Aims:

To provide students with information detailing the various types of conditions and problems facing the patient with both a mental health problem / condition and an index offence history.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Consider the relationship between mental illness and public safety.
- Identify ways in which the offender patient can be provided with effective mental health care.
- Consider personality issues in relation to the offender patient.
- Explore personal attitudes towards this group of patients to determine how best to use strengths rather than weaknesses in their care.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills):
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Consider the evidence based literature which identifies key approaches to this group of practice and apply them to his/her practice.
- Assess the needs of the forensic patient.
- Plan, implement and evaluate nursing strategies in order to provide the offender patient with effective and optimum mental health care.
