DESCRIPTION This unit will give the students the opportunity to practice hands on assessment and treatment techniques amongst each other as well as with typical young children. It will also enable them to handle children with sensory motor problems under supervision. It will also enable students develop clinical reasoning skills on the various assessment and treatment modalities.

Study-unit Aims:

1. To guide and train students in carrying out assessments using both standardized and non-standardized tools.
2. To encourage students to differentiate between the needs of different client groups as well as clients with the same condition.
3. To learn how to observe, analyse and use information gathered from assessments and during interventions.
5. To develop skills in the use of tools and mastery of treatment techniques ensuring safety at all times.
6. To learn to document and report effectively.
7. To practice the development of appropriate treatment goals and programmes and upgrade accordingly.
8. To stimulate students in providing advice to carers on management and care and the use of equipment as required.
9. To assist students in the process of linking theory with practice in the field of paediatric occupational therapy with children.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Have a basic working knowledge of main assessment and intervention modalities in paediatric practice.
2. Be more confident in the use of specialized techniques(namely related to NDT and SI frames of reference) to assess and treat children with various disabilities.
3. Be more confident in handling young clients and working with parents.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to have basic assessment and treatment techniques in the following areas:
    - Tone
    - Reflex activity
    - Postural control
    - Righting and equilibrium reactions
    - Hand function incl: shoulder stability, Midline orientation, Unilateral use, Bilateral use, Reach and grasp, Manipulation, Fine finger movements.
    -Visual motor skills and visual perceptual skills.
    - Vestibular function
    - Tactile processing(tactile discrimination and defensiveness)
    - Proprioceptive processing
    - Other aspects of somatosensory functioning (kinesthesia finger identification, one two point discrimination, graphesthesia, stereognosis, doubletouch discrimination)
