DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on the pedagogy of a selected number of team games, mainly invasion games. A practical and theoretical approach are taken so that the students experience the pedagogy of sport games as well as officiating. A number of pedagogical concepts including communication, planning and the delivery of practical sessions are tackled. The concept of team play and teamwork are also developed in this unit.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at providing students with knowledge and hands on experience of the pedagogical issues within team sport. Basketball, Football, Handball and Rugby are used as a medium through which sport pedagogy is presented.

Students experience analytical approaches of coaching pedagogies as well as develop an awareness of the team qualities which differ from individual sport. Group cohesion, team play and team work are competencies which are given importance.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Differentiate between the components of individual and team sport.
- Differentiate between effective, efficient and good pedagogy and inappropriate styles.
- Observe and analyse good practice and isolate pedagogical issues within a coaching sessions.
- Appreciate the diverse pedagogies implemented across a number of team sport through field observations.
- Learn the rules of the games.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Organise and manage a coaching session using the right and appropriate pedagogy.
- Identify good and poor pedagogy.
- Identify appropriate pedagogies for different age brackets.
- Officiate team sports.
