DESCRIPTION | This study-unit focuses on the pedagogy of a selection of team games through practical and theory sessions. Students are exposed to pedagogies which support students understanding of rules and umpiring. This study-unit focuses on different approaches towards introducing innovative methods of introducing team sports to learners. Study-unit Aims: The study-unit aims at providing students with knowledge and hands on experience of pedagogical issues used within the team sports of Hockey, Netball, Volleyball and Softball. These sports are used as a medium through which sport pedagogy and umpiring are presented. Students experience analysis of coaching using different pedagogies. Students experience the differences and similarities in team game concepts between invasion games and net and implement games. These similarities and differences are the building blocks towards effective coaching and teaching pedagogies. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Differentiate between good pedagogy and inappropriate pedagogical styles. - Analyse good practice and isolate pedagogical issues for discussion within a coaching sessions. - Appreciate diversity in pedagogies implemented across examples of net and implement team games through on field observations. - Learn the rules and umpiring methods of the games. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Organise and manage coaching sessions using appropriate pedagogies. - Identify good and poor pedagogy as well as critically reflect on practice. - Identify appropriate pedagogies related to different age brackets and participant abilities. - Officiate and run low key competitive team games.
