MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Pastoral Theology, Liturgy and Canon Law

DESCRIPTION The teaching of any subject within a curriculum requires that one understands the rationale of the subject within the school curriculum. This requires the deep understanding of what the subject entails, what the aims of the subject are, and how the subject is related to other disciplines in the curriculum. Moreover, it is not enough to speak about the rationale of Religious Education and of its place within the curriculum together with other subjects in an interdisciplinary approach, one also needs to give practical examples which help the prospective Religious Education Teacher to see how this can be actually achieved in the real classroom.

Study-unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at giving students the epistemological status of Religious Education as a school subject in Maltese Secondary Schools. This is achieved through the study of a number of pertinent documents which outline the place of Religious Education within the Maltese Curriculum. These documents include the Religious Education Policy Document, the National Minimum Curriculum and the National Curriculum Framework.

A second aim of the study-unit is to provide students with practical skills and techniques which help prospective teachers to achieve the aims of Religious Education discussed during the first part of the course, in the classroom.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- define Religious Education;
- express how culture influences Religious Education;
- state what the status of Religious Education is in the National Minimum Curriculum and the National Curriculum Framework;
- describe the nature of adolescence with the pertinent dimensions of adolescent development.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- programme their lesson in line with the particular needs of adolescents;
- prepare and present lessons which pose particular difficulty because of their delicate nature: sexuality, parent - adolescent relationships;
- challenge adolescents on particular issues and subjects such as prayer, relationships, sin and conscience;
- answer to queries and problems raised by adolescents.
