| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit focuses on life experience undergone by married couples and the family. As a methodology, the ‘case study’ approach will be used in order to facilitate discussion among students. The following scenarios will be discussed: the wish for a child and fertility problems; divorce, remarriage and participation in sacramental life; caring for a child with special needs; preparing for the death of a family member; bereavement; the psychiatric family member; the homosexual child; the drug addict; caring for an elderly patient at home; facing the challenge of dementia; the unfaithful partner. Study-Unit Aims: i. To expose students to various scenarios which reflect the daily experience of marriage and family life ii. To enable students with the moral reasoning necessary to discern the ethical and moral issues involved in situations which reflect concrete real life and to guide then to take the right decisions iii. To train students to be give the right pastoral solutions to marriage and family problems Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of this study unit, the student will be able: i. to discern the ethical and moral issues involved in the daily problems encountered by married couples and family members ii. to offer sound moral judgments and pastoral solutions iii. to enable students to acquire the necessary skills that help them to empower married coupe and family members to resolve their conflicts and problems. 2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - to help those involved in family ministry to assist married couples and their families to live their Christian faith and values in difficult situations - to enable them to resolve ethical dilemmas in the light of sound ethical judgments - to empower pastoral workers in their skills to discern the ethical and moral issues and how to offer good ethical solutions.
