DESCRIPTION | This study-unit will provide the student with the basic principles of Psychiatry in relation to Dentistry. It also explores principles in Psychology and Sociology within context the management of the dental patient. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit explores issues in health care related to psychological and sociological processes which are critically important for health care and delivery at an individual, family, work place and societal level. It also seeks to explore issues related to Professionalism, Good Dental Practice, Complaints and Litigation. Furthermore, it explores important issues in health care related to Clinical System Improvement & Patient Safety. The study-unit aims to introduce the student to psychiatric disorders and the different environments in which psychiatric and psychosocial disorders are dealt with. It will also seek to teach students on the assessment and management of psychiatric and psychological disorder in all their manifestations including holistic care in all patients across health and social care. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) Describe the nature and implications of signs and symptoms of mental disorder generally. b) Explain the signs and symptoms of anxiety, depression, psychosis, substance abuse and organic brain disorder. c) Discuss normal human development and common health problems associated with lifespan. d) Explain ways in which behaviour and health are constrained by social contexts in which we live. e) Explain ways in which personal and social factors interact, preventing illness and promoting health. f) Discuss illness behaviour and what people do when they feel anxious about their health. g) Explain how people cope with illness and disability. h) Discuss the principles of good dental practice. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: a) Recognise and explore the signs and symptoms of the main mental disorders and guide patients and significant others accordingly. b) Manage the oral manifestations of mental disorder. c) Discuss the principles of treatment and side effects, related to dental care, of the range of psychotropic medications.
