DESCRIPTION The study-unit covers the major concepts and practices of contemporary therapeutic systems including Psychoanalytic Therapy, Existential Therapy, Person-centred Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Family Therapy.

The students will also be given the opportunity to practise what they have learnt through role play and case studies. Observation of psychotherapy on video will also be possible for some of the therapeutic approaches.

Tentative Study-unit Outline:

- Introduction to the Study-unit;
- Basic Issues in Psychotherapy. (The personhood of the therapist, the importance of being ethical, building a therapeutic alliance, keeping in mind issues of gender, class and culture etc.);
- The Initial Interview;
- Psychoanalysis: Presenting the different schools (Classical Approach, Object Relations Theory, Attachment Theory, Relational Orientation);
- Psychodynamic Techniques: Transference and Counter-transference, Dream Interpretation and Analysis;
- Formulating a psychoanalytic understanding of a number of cases;
- The Humanistic Existential Approach to Psychotherapy;
- The Person-Centred Approach;
- Gestalt Therapy;
- Cases from a Humanistic-Existential perspective;
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy;
- Cases from a Cognitive Behavioural approach;
- Family Therapy;
- Formulating cases from a Systemic Perspective;
- Conclusion.
