DESCRIPTION This unit provides an overview of the burgeoning field of Economic Psychology. It examines compelling and diverse subjects that have to do with human economic behaviour such as money and power, money and mental health, money and the family, gender differences in economic behaviour, morality, taxation, the rich and the poor, lottery winners, the psychological effects of possessions and wealth, personality factors in gambling, saving and investing, money and work, charity, and the relation between money and happiness.

Study-unit Aims

This study-unit aims to provide students with a learning opportunity the further their understanding of how people behave as they do towards and with money, as well as what effect money has on human relations. Moreover, it aims to provide students with an understanding of the ways in which social groups, organisations and institutions effect the monetary beliefs and behaviours of individuals.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to acquire an understanding of how individuals act on the economy and how the collective behaviour of individuals shapes economic affairs. Moreover, students will acquire an understanding of how individuals’ economic status and situation in society determines economic behaviours, monetary beliefs, and individuals’ relationships with money.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to demonstrate a clear understanding of the main principles of economic psychology and apply their acquired knowledge of the discipline of psychology to the various aspects of human life that involve economic behaviour. Students will be able to articulate in essay form aspects of how individuals shape the economy and how the economy shapes individuals in turn.
