TITLE Radiotherapy and Oncology 1

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 5

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Radiography

DESCRIPTION Oncology and radiotherapy technique for each body system / region identified below.
Radiotherapy to include external beam radiotherapy / brachytherapy as appropriate.
Care of the patient during radiotherapy – general issues and specific to body system / region.

1. Anticancer therapies.
Definition, classification, action and uses of cytotoxic drugs; cell population and tumour size, cell cycle and relevance in cytotoxic chemotherapy; modes / methods of administration and side-effects; management of patients undergoing cytotoxic chemotherapy; hypoxic cell sensitizers; hormones and monoclonal antibodies.

2. Urinary system.
- Oncology and radiotherapy technique;
- Kidney and ureters, urinary bladder and urethra;
- Excretion of drugs from the body.

3. Female Reproductive System.
- Oncology and radiotherapy technique;
- Uterus, ovary, vagina;
- Breast;
- Use / effects of hormonal treatments;
- Pregnancy and implications of radiotherapy;
- Effects of radiation on the system.

4. Male reproductive system.
- Oncology and radiotherapy technique;
- Prostate gland;
- Penis and scrotum; testes;
- Spermatogenesis and relevance in the treatment of young men.

Study-unit Aims:

- Discuss the use of anticancer therapies for the systemic treatment of cancer;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the usual external beam radiotherapy of the urinary system, female reproductive system and male reproductive system;
- Evaluate management options and care of patients with such malignancies;
- Demonstrate an awareness of the more complex external beam radiotherapy and brachytherapy techniques and concepts;
- Reflect on the factors that should be considered in choosing various treatment options for adult patients;
- Discuss and evaluate advances in oncology and radiotherapy practice.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss the importance of anticancer therapies as management tools for cancer;
- Describe the oncology for the urinary system, female reproductive system and male reproductive system;
- Describe the appropriate radiotherapy technique for the above anatomical systems.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Describe the clinical features and evaluate various management methods for malignant disease of the above anatomical regions / systems;
- Anticipate and facilitate coping mechanisms for the possible physical / psychological effects on the patient of the disease and side effects of the various treatment methods in order to offer the highest standards of care in both physical and psychological respects at all stages of the radiotherapy process;
- Evaluate the radiotherapy techniques used to treat cancers of the anatomical regions / systems described above.
