DESCRIPTION 1. Palliative care.
- Principles of palliative medicine and the role of the modalities available;
- Principles and mechanisms of pain control;
- The role of the health care team;
- The role of the hospice.

2. Palliative radiotherapy.
- Principles of radiotherapy. Adaptations to techniques;
- Care of the patient – role of the radiographer and the multi-disciplinary team.

3. End of life.
- Ethical and legal issues at the end of life.

4. Complementary medicine.
- Study of complementary medicine and the development of a holistic approach in cancer management.

5. Psychosocial issues in cancer care.
- Supportive care of the patient with cancer.
- Emotional and personal issues.
- Impact on patient and family.
- The social context of cancer – gender, social class, culture and race issues.
- Impact on professionals involved in cancer care.

Study-unit Aims:

- Provide students with an opportunity to develop their professional practice in relation to a holistic approach to cancer care;
- Enable students to reflect on the factors that should be considered in palliative care and requirements of patients at the end of their life;
- Examine psychosocial issues in the context of cancer care;
- Enable students to discuss the role of complementary therapies in cancer care.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss and evaluate current approaches to the management of patients requiring palliative care (including radiotherapy techniques);
- Discuss issues relating to the uses of complementary therapies in cancer care.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Discuss issues relating to the care of patients at the end of their life;
- Explore the psychological and sociological issues related to their management of patients with cancer;
- Evaluate applications and techniques such that they are able to make informed professional judgments in relation to each part of the radiotherapy process in which they are involved.
