DESCRIPTION This study-unit seeks to give an overview of the performing arts in the Spanish context from a historical (albeit brief) as well as a current point of view. Focusing mainly on case studies, the study-unit explores dance, theatre and music, and relates important aspects of these arts with the wider political and social situation of Spain.

Study-unit Aims:

- To provide an overview of the current situation of the performing arts in Spain, linked with their past history.
- To place the performing arts within the wider social and political Spanish context.
- To familiarise students with traditions and current practices of dance, theatre and music in Spain.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- recognise and describe major historical and political aspects of performing arts events in Spain.
- report links between political events and performances, or performance trends, in the context of the performing arts in Spain.
- compare reactions, within different performing art forms, to different contexts and times in the Spanish context.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- analyse case studies, using them as tools to understand wider artistic, political or social contexts within Spain.
- demonstrate practical understanding of basic forms of popular theatre, dance and music.
- describe fundamental aspects of the cultural policies and structures concerning the performing arts in Spain
