DESCRIPTION This foundational study-unit will provide students with an introduction to the basic theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and seeks to provide students with elementary knowledge of the Chinese medicine, including the philosophy of TCM, and an ability to use basic theory of TCM in other study-units within the course of studies. Practical sessions in a clinical setting will be arranged for students to facilitate a better understanding of the TCM.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to enable students to comprehend essential basic theory of Chinese medicine including the philosophy of yin-yang and the five elements and viscera manifestation amongst others. It also aims to help foster the students’ interest in Chinese medicine.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this study-unit, students will be able to:

1. define and explain the basic theory of Chinese medicine such as the philosophy of yin-yang and the five elements viscera manifestation, meridian system as well as other health care methods;
2. make use of knowledge of TCM to better understand the human body’s function of physiology and pathology;
3. be familiar with the thinking mode of TCM and apply it to daily life situations;
4. illustrate and appraise the view of life as depicted in Chinese medicine through theoretical cornerstones such as the three treasures of essence , qi and Shen, meridian system and etiology and the therapeutic principle.
