Study-Unit Description

CODE TEM3001

TITLE Networked Operating Systems for Educators

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL 6

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT Technology and Entrepreneurship Education

DESCRIPTION The study-unit provides a hands-on approach for prospective computing educators who need to consolidate their knowledge of networked operating systems. During this unit students will explore the main concepts and principles which underly operating systems and how these operating systems can be configured to participate in a networked environment. Students will also learn how to install multiple operating systems in a virtual environment to simulate networks.

Study-unit Aims:

The aim of this study -unit is to present the main concepts in various networked operating systems and explain how teachers can demonstrate these functions in a class environment.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Describe the main functions and characteristics of operating systems;
- Identify different components of operating systems;
- Demonstrate how memory is managed in an operating system;
- Distinguish between authentication and authorisation functions;
- Explain how traffic is routed between different hosts;
- Use virtual environments to simulate multiple hosts on the same machine.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Install an operating system;
- Configure network settings;
- Manage processes;
- Manage users;
- Assign Rights in File Systems;
- Schedule jobs on an operating system;
- Configure name resolution in a network;
- Use diagnostic tools to troubleshoot network configuration.
