DESCRIPTION This unit presents an academic discussion about the concept of visual literacy and its presence within the technological domain of knowledge. While exploring the components of the theory of visual literacy the unit discusses what aspects of technological and general education are served by visual literacy and what are the skills, competencies or abilities involved when a person can claim to be visually literate.

Study-Unit Aims:

1. To present contemporary definitions of visual literacy;
2. To apply the theory of visual literacy to technological domains of knowledge.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Cite and discuss definitions of visual literacy and its components;
2. Discuss what aspect of technological and general education are served by achievement of visual literacy abilities;
3. List and discuss a set of visual skills, competencies or abilities which are involved in the journey toward achievement of visual literacy;
4. Relate the theory of visual literacy to other important theories such as Paivio’s dual-coding theory.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
1. Employ internal cognitive visual literacy abilities such as visual thinking, visual reasoning, critical viewing and visualization amongst others;
2. Show evidence of the externalization of visual literacy abilities such as reading/decoding/interpreting visual statements and writing/encoding/creating visual statements pertaining to the context of technological domain of knowledge such as electrical knowledge, mechanical knowledge, mathematical knowledge and aesthetic knowledge amongst others.
