DESCRIPTION This is an introductory unit in safety for a technological / engineering workshop environment. It introduces learners to prevention and intervention techniques that ensure the safety of self and others within a technological / engineering workshop environment. The unit covers the formal assessment and reporting of environments and procedures that might pose potential risks and hazards to users of a workshop. This is done with reference to authoritative documentation such as legal notices and national or international standards of safety. The unit also discusses pedagogical approaches and challenges related to the teaching and learning of health and safety topics in a school setting.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To instill in students a basic level of proficiency for safety measures that need to be adopted in a technological / engineering workshop environment;
- To present students with the necessary practical knowledge to prevent and react to incidents;
- To present students with the necessary practical knowledge to assess and report incidents formally.


Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Evidence an awareness of authoritative and legal reference documentation regarding safety standards in a technological / engineering workshop environment;
- Communicate effectively formal written assessment or incident reports.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Read and interpret signage that warns about hazardous materials or equipment in a workshop;
- Recognize and make use of personal protective equipment;
- Identify and discriminate safe and unsafe working practices in self and others;
- Recognize the need for maintenance of equipment.
