Study-Unit Description

CODE TEV5004

TITLE Introductory Industry-field Placement for Teachers of Vocational Education (Year 1)

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Technology and Entrepreneurship Education

DESCRIPTION Learners will be required to conduct a 100-hour industry field placement observing and working alongside professional staff in a work-place environment related to their teaching-subject area. This work placement will be facilitated by the faculty, and will be determined upon consultation with the host companies. Learners will be required to identify technical competences relevant to their subject area as a means of enhancing their subject area knowledge. Classroom and project work will be coordinated with the hosting companies. Advance meetings for the work placement relationship will have begun during the second term, so that the student will be able to gain a positive contribution during their placement.

Study-Unit Aims:

The objective of the work placement is to provide the learners with a real-life, practical experience in the workplace. This kind of experience is invaluable – it tests skills, proves competency, and gives an opportunity to observe and receive feedback and supervision. Work placement experience will allow the learners to acquire a solid understanding of work-based processes and be able to apply these within a pedagogical implementation.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- apply teaching pedagogies through the work-based exposure;
- start identifying work-related technical competences and applying these within secondary school learning context;
- demonstrate basic knowledge application to contextualize industry work-based experience when teaching a vocational subject-area.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- develop the capacity to demonstrate an understanding of the basic industrial processes and relate these to their own pedagogical methods;
- demonstrate reflective practices on their work-based experience in a coherent manner;
- consolidate the basic concepts of applied work-based learning pedagogies into their teaching methods.
