DESCRIPTION | Language enhancement of Maltese aims at giving students an awareness of the structural aspects of Maltese as the target language. Content Summary: The emphasis of the study-unit will be on production rather than reception so that students will eventually be able to speak clearly in appropriate styles and registers. They will interpret different text types in terms of function, audience, and effectiveness. Concentration will be on refining the students’ communicative language competence which has the following components: linguistic competences, sociolinguistic competences, and pragmatic competences. Students will be also trained in Sight Translations. Study-Unit Aims: - Develop the students’ linguistic skills to help them further develop their interpretation abilities; - Increase the students’ proficiency in Maltese as a target language through interpretation and related exercises; - Make the students aware of the linguistic and cultural aspects of Maltese as a target language; - Introduce the students to different styles and registers. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Have a better insight into the linguistic skills required to accurately interpret into Maltese; - Distinguish between different styles and registers in Maltese; - Identify the key linguistic and cultural aspects of Maltese as a target language. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Effectively apply the skills acquired to all interpretation modes, including consecutive interpretation and sight translation; - Confidently, accurately and coherently interpret complex ideas into Maltese; - Switch between different styles and registers in Maltese.
