DESCRIPTION | At the end of the study-unit students will be capable of giving a fluent and effective consecutive interpretation of a speech lasting at least 7 minutes into the target language, accurately reproducing the content of the original and using appropriate terminology and register. Training in these skills will require a variety of exercises, such as content analysis and memory exercises, consecutive interpretation with and without notes, summarisation, sight translation, proficiency and fluency exercises, and note-taking techniques. The speeches used will confront the students with a diversity of subject areas, styles, and registers, and their length, information density and degree of technicality and specificity will increase as the study-unit progresses. Study-Unit Aims: - Enhance the students’ memory skills through memorisation, note-taking and speech analysis exercisesl - Train the students to give an accurate and coherent interpretation of speeches progressively increasing in length (up to a maximum of 6 to 7 minutes); - Teach students how to professionally conduct themselves in a variety of consecutive interpretation settings, including remote settings. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Accurately analyse speeches with a view to interpreting them consecutively; - Have a sound understanding of the note-taking and memorisation techniques required for consecutive interpretation; - Identify and apply the criteria used to evaluate consecutive interpretation in a professional setting. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Give a fluent and coherent consecutive interpretation of a speech lasting 6 to 7 minutes into the target language, accurately reproducing the content of the original and using appropriate terminology and register; - Conduct themselves professionally during consecutive interpretation assignments, both on site and remotely; - Critically evaluate their performance and that of their peers.
