DESCRIPTION | Court interpreting is becoming increasingly professionalized as the number of practitioners grows and judicial systems and legislatures focus more on language rights as an element of due process. The study-unit will cover the history of the profession, the legal basis for the interpreter’s presence in the courtroom, criminal and civil procedure, and the role of the interpreter in the judiciary setting, ethical principles, and techniques of interpreting and resources for continuing education and research. Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to: - Prepare students in legal interpreting studies and court interpreting. - Enhance interpreting techniques in a court context. - Acquaint students in criminal and civil procedures. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Interpret in simultaneous and consecutive modes within local court contexts. - Interpret according to Maltese/European Legal Systems. - Enter into this challenging profession. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Interpret in legal/court contexts. - Enhance foreign language skills.
